Electronic Monitoring of the Feeding Behavior of Blissidae, Coreidae, Miridae, and Plataspidae

Popis: In this chapter, we summarize and discuss the most relevant feeding activities and their respective EPG waveforms performed by true bugs from four families, Miridae (infraorder Cimicomorpha), Blissidae, Coreidae, and Plataspidae (infraorder Pentatomomorpha). Recordings performed with species of Blissidae, Coreidae, and Plataspidae share similar waveforms and strong similarities of feeding activities, such as feeding on vascular tissues (mostly phloem cells) and use of the salivary sheath feeding strategy. In contrast, species of Miridae evaluated with EPG do not feed on vascular tissues, and none secrete a salivary sheath. To feed, they use a different feeding strategy – cell rupture – to degrade plant tissue for subsequent ingestion of cell contents. Pentatomidae, covered in Chap. 4 and herein compared with the other families, employ both feeding strategies to obtain nutrients from host plants. They share similarly shaped waveforms and biological activities with species of the four other families that have been evaluated using EPG.
