Popis: Letter writing enabled Alice James to resist her consignment to a personally limiting—and publicly authorized—language and narrative. While James accepted the gendered privatization of speech which this marginally "literary" form imposed, she also managed in her letters to exploit the access to language which privatization extended to her, and thus to contest her marginalization.
