Popis: Children exposed to playful learning curricula in classrooms have better outcomes in social skills, academic outcomes, and school readiness. Although we know that children can learn from watching television programs, whether or not watching a playful learning curriculum, over the course of several weeks, affects outcomes from pretest to posttest is still unknown. In the context of electronic, screen-based media such as television programs, the question remains: Do young children exposed to a playful learning curriculum via television perform better on STEM-based tasks and show greater creativity in their solutions compared to a control group without exposure to a playful learning curriculum? If such effects do occur, then what is the nature of these effects -- do they reflect direct learning and near transfer of specific content and skills from a parallel problem seen on screen, or broader modeling and application of skills to new problem contexts that do not directly parallel specific problems seen in the program? Infusing the pedagogy of playful learning into television programming designed for 3-5 year olds is a novel initiative. In collaboration with Sesame workshop, an internationally recognized organization for high-quality educational content, the effectiveness of playful learning curricula can be assessed. Sesame workshop has a proven record of evidence-based programming for children in the U.S. and internationally, with a special focus on children from ethnically diverse and predominantly low-socioeconomic backgrounds. By designing high-quality, engaging content for all children, this study will advance knowledge around enhancing STEM skills in a diverse population. This work will provide insight into how we can enhance children’s engagement with electronic screen media programs in order to promote early STEM skills.
