Popis: | Acute respiratory distress syndrome is a feared lifethreatening complication characterized by acute onset respiratory insufficiency. At the moment, there is not a specific approach for COVID-19, treatment is essentially supportive and symptomatic;in addition to protective measures to prevent transmission. The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation technique has not been widely studied in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome due to COVID-19 that has failed conventional therapy. The purpose of this narrative review is to present the current information about acute respiratory syndrome secondary to the novel coronavirus, the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support, and how it can be a valuable tool for patients in this situation. © 2021 Academia Nacional de Medicina.
