Popis: | Semimetals Bi and Sb are very important for both fundamental sciences and practical applications because of their unique band structure with nontrivial topology, high carrier mobility and strong spin-orbit coupling. Recently, research interests on Bi and Sb have been shifted from 3D bulk properties to 2D quantum behaviors because of emerging quantum confinement and surface effects that dominate at nanoscale. Ultrathin films of Bi and Sb are particularly promising for quantum transport and spintronic applications. Here we report a systematic first-principles study of electronic structure of Bi and Sb thin films. We also present a review of our experimental works on fabrication and characterization of Bi and Sb nanoscale thin films. The results, taken collectively, offer a comprehensive understanding of emergent electronic properties of these 2D spin-orbit coupled materials. |
