Self-help skills have been a foundational aspect of training in the field of intellectual disabilities (ID) for decades. The primary method of treatment has been variations of applied behavior analysis (ABA). Training strategies such as breaking skills into steps, using least prompt strategies (i.e., verbal, social), and modeling strategies are common and have been used effectively for many years. Some of the topics addressed include self-protection, eating, purchasing items, dressing, safety, telephone use, and hygiene, among others. This chapter provides an overview of treatment in these and related areas for persons with ID. |
