Popis: | Remote from modern urban centers and, until recently, inaccessible by most twentieth-century standards, the Western Himalayas have only just begun to be recognized as one of the great art centers of the pre-modern world by any but a few enthusiastic specialists. The richness of this region's art, and its influence on art traditions in other parts of Asia, cannot be overestimated. Created in the service of the Buddhist religion, and traveling in the company of Buddhist pilgrims and monks, the art of Kashmir and the adjacent Himalayan regions profoundly affected the schools of Inner Asia, Central Tibet (dBus and gTsang Districts), and even the heartland of Northern China where, for example, Kashmiri traditions were followed in the excavation of the Yungang caves. Indeed, we cannot know fully the history of art in North Asia until the arts of the Western Himalayas are understood. |
