Popis: Humans are responsible for accelerated global overheating because of positive feedback loops between the climate and land use. It is past time for the scientific community to provide clear information on ways to address such challenges using sound science. It is our moral imperative. Humans in democratic societies have ethical obligations to seek improvement in their living conditions without markedly damaging their environment and nature. However, conflicts arise when scientists attempt to influence policy decisions because such efforts inevitably clash with their employers, prioritization of short-term economics over the needs of nature, status quo cultures, and deeply held convictions of others. We offer advice from professionals working for state and federal agencies, universities, private consulting firms, and nongovernmental organizations regarding how to affect natural resource policies while remaining gainfully employed. Keys to their success included working with other like-minded individuals and institutions, publishing and presenting research in public and professional venues, clearly distinguishing science from policy implications, being tactful when offering constructive criticism, and knowing when to call for outside peer review or drop out of scientifically biased interagency projects.
