Popis: Synchronic modal equivalencing (SME) was introduced recently as a very effective framework for constructing structure-preserving dynamic equivalents in large power systems. The framework utilizes one-dimensional synchrony for partitioning the system and then constructs a modal equivalent using ideas from selective modal analysis (SMA). In this paper, the authors introduce a generalization of synchrony, termed multi-dimensional synchrony, for directly constructing modal equivalents. The authors discuss the advantages of the generalization, and illustrate the implementation of the new equivalents in a structure-preserving differential-algebraic setting. A 23-machine model is used to evaluate the improvement in performance over the previous version of SME.
