Popis: Floods cause serious damage to infrastructure and financial losses, which is largely due to inappropriate management of floodplains. To a large extent, this is associated with inadequate spatial planning in these areas, and very often even absence of any planning at all. The boundaries of flood zones have been delimited, and then included in planning documents, only for approximately 40% of flood-prone areas in Poland. In addition, the boundaries set within some small uncontrolled catchment areas (not included in permanent hydrological monitoring) often diverge from the actual reach of water recorded during catastrophic floods, with the flood zone usually much wider than that specified in the planning documents.
