It is important to investigate the source of outbreaks of food poisoning in order to plan and instigate control measures that are suitable, sensible and proportionate. This case study follows an outbreak that was somewhat atypical, but which, by that very strangeness, highlights important issues in outbreak investigation and management. It illustrates the challenges associated with investigating the contamination of a food product through a common ingredient and with implementing national or international control measures that are outside the influence of the local control team. It should be read alongside Chapter 2 ‘A point-source outbreak of Salmonella in an ethnic community in the UK’ by Stewart, Vivancos, Keenan and Theodore. |
