The results from the first experiment showed that the responses of adult hens towards human beings were very resistant to modification. The typical responses of two stocks of domestic fowl, one docile and one flighty, were generally unaffected by associating human contact with a food reward or with a presumably non-rewarding situation. On the other hand, the evidence from the second experiment suggested that the responses of chicks were more easily modified. The association of human contact with a food reward resulted in chicks of the docile stock showing an increased amount of approach towards a human being. However, this same association had no effect on the withdrawal responses of chicks of the flighty stock. |
