It is well known, in the low level laser therapy, that an important number of patients exhibit positive results at PLACEBO treatment. That is why we decided to analyze the psychological profile of 156 patients presented rheumatical diseases, divided into tow groups: laser group and PLACEBO group. We applied the Woodworth-Mathews test to all patients before the laser treatment. This is a test for identification of the abnormal tendencies in the normal human behavior. Finally, following the PLACEBO exposure, we noticed that the patients' emotional tendencies and psychological instability had a strong influence on the obtained good results. We conclude that the Woodworth- Mathews test is useful to anticipate the possible false/positive results in the real treatment. Nevertheless it may also be used from the psychological point of view.© (2000) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
