Highly oriented structures are obtained by photopolymerisation of liquid crystalline diacrylates. Using X-ray diffraction it is shown that by photopolymerisation, apart from the macroscopic structure the microstructure of the molecules also becomes frozen in. Consequently with the aid of photopolymerised samples it is deduced that a cybotactic phase is formed before the transformation into the monotropic smectic C phase. Further it is concluded that molecules in the liquid crystalline state assume an all-transconformation. |
