Popis: The relative abundances of the negative ions present in pre-breakdown discharges in oxygen for values of the parameter E/N of between 60×10 −17 and 130×10 −17 V cm 2 have been determined at gas number densities of up to 6.5×10 17 cm −3 . The dominant ion species observed were O − , O 2 − and O 3 − together with slight traces of O 4 − . The relevance of the data to studies, under swarm conditions, of the behaviour of negative ions in oxygen is briefly discussed with particular reference to the occurrence of electron detachment.
