Although acidic amino acids are widely believed to act as chemical transmitters at a number of synapses in the brain, the precise nature of the transmitter substance remains unclear. Several researchers have attempted to evaluate the identity of the neurotransmitter utilised in these pathways by examining the in vitro release of transmitter candidates such as glutamate and as-partate (Fagg and Lane, 1979; Fagg and Foster, 1983; Fonnum et al., 1983). This approach has indeed provided some relevant information especially when used in combination with lesion experiments. However, any extrapolation of in vitro data to the in vivo situation is fraught with difficulties, and in vivo neurochemical studies will clearly be necessary before a physiological role for any putative transmitter can be confirmed. |
