Popis: Fiber-reinforced intermetallic matrix composites are of interest for possible application as high temperature structural components. In addition to high strength and high modulus, the reinforcing fibers in these composites should possess a reasonable match in thermal expansion and thermochemical compatibility with the intermetallic matrix. None of the current available fibers meet all these criteria for use with titanium aluminides and nickel aluminides as the matrix materials. Thus, there is a need for the development of chemically and thermally stable fibers, which are compatible with potential high-temperature intermetallic matrices. Recent studies indicate that compounds in the Al[sub 2]O[sub 3]-Y[sub 2]O[sub 3] system are potential candidates as reinforcement fibers for ceramic and intermetallic matrix composites. The objective of this study was to determine the compatibility between oxides in the Al-Y-O system and selected intermetallic matrix alloys. In this work, solid state reactions were evaluated between intermetallic alloys in the Ni-Al and Ti-Al systems and oxides in the Al[sub 2]O[sub 3]-Y[sub 2]O[sub 3] system.
