Muscle injuries can greatly impair an individual's function and ability to participate in recreational and occupational activities. While differing mechanisms of muscle injury affect different aspects of skeletal muscle structure, the phases of muscle healing among the varying types of injury are remarkably preserved. The overall interrelated and overlapping phases of muscle repair involve: 1) degeneration of injured muscle fibers, 2) inflammation, 3) regeneration and, finally, 4) the development of fibrosis. In this chapter we will discuss the natural processes occurring in skeletal muscle healing, and we will provide a summary of current biological treatment techniques being investigated to restore skeletal muscle function after injury. |
