The e.m.f. of the cells Cd/CdCl2/Cl–/AgCl/Ag(cell 1) and Cd; Hg (2 phase amalgam)/CdCl2/Cl–/AgCl/Ag (cell 2) has been measured using HCl and KCl solutions in formamide, at various Cl– concentrations at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30°C. The results are used to calculate the standard potential of the Cd/CdCl2 electrode in formamide, and to calculate ΔG and ΔH for the interaction of anhydrous CdCl2 with formamide to form the solid solvate CdCl2. 2½HCONH2. The heat of this reaction has been measured calorimetrically and is in excellent agreement with that calculated from the e.m.f. data. |
