As the largest estuary reservoir in the world, the Qingcaosha reservoir raw water project has undergone 15 years' demonstration and 5 years' construction and has been running for 7 years. In this chapter, the planning ideas and strategic layout of the Qingcaosha reservoir raw water project are highlighted, with the Dujiangyan taken as an example case. In addition, a series of achievements and experience have been attained from overcoming challenges throughout all the engineering phases, including planning problems such as preventing saltwater intrusion, stabilizing river regime and protecting water sources, construction problems such as closing reservoir dykes, tunnelling a water conveyance pipe across the Yangtze River and laying land-based water pipelines and operational problems such as eutrophication, energy consumption for water diversion and delivery and water quality early warning and dispatch. |
