Investigation of an Alternative Intermediate Band Solar Cell Design

Popis: | 23rd European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition, 1-5 September 2008, Valencia, Spain; 411-415 A new intermediate band solar cell design is investigated by numerical modeling. In contrast to other proposed designs the intermediate band is placed in the p-doped base of an ordinary pn-solar cell. The intermediate band is thus not half filled with doping, but is filled by photo-generated electrons. The modeling shows that such a design can yield efficiencies well above the efficiencies from a reference model without an intermediate band, as well as above the Shockley-Queisser limit. Light concentration is found to be necessary for efficient electron pumping via the intermediate band. To achieve the highest efficiencies, the absorption cross section for transitions from the intermediate band to the conduction band has to be larger than the corresponding cross-section for transitions from the valence band to the intermediate band. |
