Popis: It has been presumed that the primary role for the proteolipid polypeptides (PLPs: PLP and DM-20) and Po in the generation of the compact myelin sheath in the CNS (PLPs), and PNS (Po) is essentially the same: to mediate via homophilic interactions the self-adhesion of the plasma membrane that yields compact myelin. The molecular basis for adhesive functions at the intraperiod line in the respective nervous systems in which these proteins operate must however be completely different; curiously, these most abundant integral membrane proteins in tetrapods share absolutely no biochemical, genetic or structural features in common with each other.
