Observations have been made of the oxygen micro-climate during connective tissue regeneration in rabbit ear chambers. A modification of standard ear chambers is described which enables non-destructive measurements with oxygen micro electrodes to be made on the tissue. Wound ‘dead space’ had a very low oxygen tension (less than 3 mm Hg). Macrophages were the only cells which appeared to tolerate such low tension. Actively dividing fibroblasts were confined to regions where the tension was more than 15 mm Hg. Collagen formation appeared especially at tensions between 15 to 30 mm Hg.Oxygen breathing increased the intercapillary oxygen gradient especially in the zones of active cell division.Changes in the microcirculation produced very marked alteration of the oxygen climate in the tissue. |
