Problems of the North are, in the first place, the problems of the Northern countries, whose territories (or their greater parts) are situated to the north of Latitude 55 N and their climate is influenced by the Arctic Ocean and the adjoin cold seas. This zone includes a number of developed, rather densely populated countries such as Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, as well as Iceland, ice-covered Greenland and Alaska (the USA). The Russian Federation and Canada are distinguished by large Northern areas that are characterized by a sparse population and a rather low level of economic development. |
