Popis: Maspin is a novel serine protease inhibitor with tumorsuppressing activity in breast and other cancers. Being a class II tumor suppressor, its genomic DNA remains intact in course of malignant transformation. The mechanism for Maspins tumorsuppressing activity has not been fully elucidated. New studies show that Maspin is capable of inhibiting angiogenesis. A direct interaction of Maspin with the tumorsuppressor gene p53 has also been shown. Immunohistochemical and RT-PCR experiments confirm a stepwise loss of Maspin expression during malignant transformation in breast carcinomas. Besides breast carcinoma, Maspin also seems to play an important role for the invasion and metastasis of prostate and other cancers. Based on its properties, Maspin might be a promising new substance for the development of new therapeutic methods for the treatment of breast and other cancers.
