Popis: Valvular pathology is a growing concern for the practicing anesthesiologist given the increasing longevity of the patient population. Many patients will present for noncardiac surgery with comorbidities involving stenosis and/or regurgitation in one or more of the four heart valves (aortic, mitral, tricuspid, and pulmonary). These valves are involved throughout the process of blood flow, functioning to preserve pressure gradients and allow for continual forward flow. Awareness of the physiological alterations associated with each valvular pathology and how to optimize the intraoperative hemodynamics is crucial to provide appropriate anesthetic care. Subacute bacterial endocarditis has also been a growing concern impacting which procedures require antibiotic prophylaxis.
