A scoping study of a tokamak reactor fueled by a D-/sup 3/He plasma is presented. The Apollo D-/sup 3/He tokamak incorporates recent advances in high-field magnets (20 T) and utilizes rectennas to convert the synchrotron radiation directly to electricity. The low neutron wall loading (0.1 MW/m/sup 2/) permits a first wall lasting the life of the plant and enables the reactor to be classified as inherently safe. The cost of electricity is less than that from a similar power level D-T reactor. Technology considerations, including heat flux considerations, reference technology, and radiation damage to structural materials are discussed. > |
