Popis: | Objective: to describe the profile of mortality due to unintentional fall of elderly residents in the Federal District (DF), Brazil, in the period from 2011 to 2015. Method: an observational, cross-sectional study, with data obtained from cadaveric reports from the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) of the Federal District and Police Occurrences. The data analysis was done through descriptive statistics, with investigation of associations between variables by means of the Chi-square statistical test. Results: the falls accounted for 38.7% of accidents, more frequently in the age group of 80-89 years (34.6%), males (19.5%), widowers (37.6%) and married (34, 6%), the latter group being predominantly male. Most of the falls occurred in the home (72.2%) during the month of August (11.7%), and about one third of the cases were observed in the afternoon (33.2%, n = 68). The investigation of alcohol and narcotic substances intake was performed in a few cases, due to the high percentage of hospitalizations (92.2%). Falls caused by slipping, stumbling or false steps accounted for 73.7% of the cases. There was an association between marital status and gender in the study group. Conclusion: despite the complexity involved in the genesis of falls in the elderly, knowing their characteristics contribute to the adoption of specific measures for the prevention of mortality in this population.
