Popis: | Hydramethylnon (AMDRO) and fenoxycarb (LOGIC) baits applied monthly (June 1989–May 1990) for control of red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren, resulted in seasonal trends in rates of activity and levels of control that were attributable to the time of bait application. Summer (June–August) applications with both hydramethylnon and fenoxycarb resulted in rapid declines in population indices. Control peaked 2–4 mo after application and was maintained for ≈11 mo after treatment. Fall applications with fenoxycarb were characterized by a slow, gradual decrease in the population index, attaining a maximum level of control 10mo after treatment. Hydramethylnon applied in winter provided highly erratic results. Maximum decrease occurred 4 mo after application, with reinfestation beginning 7 mo after application. Spring treatments with both products were similar to summer, except that reinfestation occurred ≈6 mo after treatment. Therefore, if rapid population suppression is the main objective of a control effort, applications would be best applied in spring. However, summer and fall treatments generally result in gradual population suppression over a more extended period of time. |
