The Euglena gracilis chloroplast genome encodes at least 17 chloroplast ribosomal proteins. Most are present in polycistronic operons. Known coding loci have the following gene organizations: (1) rps 12-rps7-tufA, (2) rpl20, (3) rpl23-rpl2-rpsl9-rpl22-rps3-orf5l6-rpll6-rpll4-rpl5-rps8-rpl36-trnI-rps14, (4) rps4-rps11, and (5) rps2-atpI-atpH-atpF-atpA. These 17 chloroplast ribosomal protein genes compare in number to the 19 found in higher plant chloroplast genomes. Many of the Euglena genes contain group III introns, which are unique to the Euglena chloroplast genome. In this article, the structure, transcription, introns and RNA processing pathways of Euglena chloroplast ribosomal protein operons will be reviewed. |
