It is necessary to operate Lake Kinneret in the future according to revised policies. This has required development of a tool which permits a forecast of the effect of the revised operating rules on the quality and quantity of available water for direct consumption from the lake. For this purpose, a combined daily water and chloride inflow simulation model, M8KNRT, was developed. This paper presents a description of the model, which is based on the inverse relationship between water inflows to Lake Kinneret from saline springs and ground water, and their chloride contribution to the lake. This concept, implying that fresh aquifer heads and discharges regulate the brine fluxes, is the most important feature of the M8KNRT model. The excellent results achieved following calibration of the model based on simulation of water and chloride inflows to Lake Kinneret, and on chloride concentrations in the lake confirm its validity for use in future forecasts under different operating conditions within the lake watershed. The model is structured in general form, allowing it to be applied to any other lake with similar problems. |
