Popis: | The authors study the phenomenon of thickening of the intima by treating segments of the aorta and the carotid, femoral and renal arteries to electron microscopy, autoradiography, and radioassay, using tritium-labelled uridine and thymidine as tracers. They find that the thickening is due largely to the migration and proliferation of endothelial and muscle cells as well as to the ingrowth of capillary-type vessels and their surrounding pericytes which are converted into fibroblast-like cells responsible for producing an intercellular substance which contributes to the thickening of the artery wall. |
