Popis: Friction and life of floppy disks were determined by multiple passes of a head slider on a series of floppy disks with γ-Fe2O3 magnetic layers of two different filler fractions and four different lubricant fractions. The friction exhibited little relationship to the lubricant fraction but decreased somewhat as the filler fraction was increased. Disk life increased markedly with increasing fractions of lubricant and filler. Scratch-like damage which determines the life of disks was found to be the result of detachment of the magnetic layer due to localized high friction generated by severe flow of the binder resin in the magnetic layer.
