Open source finite element analysis (FEA) solvers and pre and post processors have been available for more than a dozen years. Most of them have been developed by academic institutions or governmental agencies though some have been sponsored by industry. These open source tools can be a highly accessible and valuable resource to industry. This paper surveys open source FEA software tools and how these tools currently fit into the ecosystem of computer-aided engineering (CAE) software, with an emphasis on industry applications. This paper specifically focuses on several niches that open-source tools fill that are otherwise not well populated by commercial equivalents and identifies uses for which these tools are not well-suited. Specific concerns related to the use of open source tools in industry are addressed such as validation of results, licensing concerns, user and development support, usability, and stability. |
