This chapter considers the reasons for increased demand in bilateral knee arthroplasty procedures and discusses recent literature comparing simultaneous and staged total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA). Due to increased perioperative risk, bilateral simultaneous TKA should be undertaken with caution in selected, well counselled patients. In contrast, bilateral simultaneous UKA is a safe and clinically viable option for patients with a suitable disease pattern. |
