Popis: A multiple-baseline across two groups experimental design was used to examine the effects of a multicomponent individual incentive system on the performance, safety, and satisfaction of 22 truck drivers. The intervention included incentive pay, which was increased twice; individual and group feedback; and loss of incentive pay for accidents. Drivers earned points for completing various types of jobs. The primary measure was the percentage of job points earned in less time than the baseline average, which controlled for number of hours worked and miles driven. After intervention, performance increased and remained high for nearly 4 years. Accidents did not increase when the intervention occurred, and satisfaction with pay and work were not affected by it. Labor cost savings averaged more than $5,000 a month while the incentive program was in effect, and drivers' pay increased. These results add to the substantial literature on individual incentives by documenting increased productivity sustained over a long period without accompanying increases in accidents or decreases in workers' satisfaction.
