In reverse micellar media consisting of 4:1 mixtures of cyclohexane-hexanol (v/v), or similar solvent, and Triton X-100 (TX-100), methylene blue undergoes a strong color change, the band maximum being shifted from 652 nm to 520 nm. The spectral data suggest a 1:1 complex formation between TX-100 and the dye and this leads to effective dye stacking in the reverse micelles, resulting in the strong color change of the dye. The possibilities of charge transfer interaction or of hydrophobic interaction between the dye and the surfactant molecules for the formation of the complex in the reverse micelles are discussed. |
