Publisher Summary Gold and silver occur together in the alloy electrum that has no fixed composition, although the term is frequently applied to minerals with more than 20% silver. This chapter deals with ores, where the silver grade is sufficiently high to warrant modification to the design of the plant relative to that, which would be specified if the silver component was not present, and where the silver and gold are amenable to the recovery by conventional cyanidation. There are a numerous gold deposits, where the recovered silver grade exceeds that of the recovered gold grade so that the silver output in terms of metal produced exceeds that of gold. However, at current metal prices, silver production needs to be more than about 70 times that of gold to be of greater economic importance. |
