In April 2020 an Archaeological Topographical Survey was undertaken of an enclosed tract of grassland to the north of No. 29 Clophill Road, Maulden, Bedfordshire. The purpose of the survey was to gain a better understanding of any surviving earthworks pertaining to the medieval to post-medieval agrarian landscape and to obtain an accurate measured archaeological record prior to their loss or damage in the course of proposed development. The earthworks were surveyed to Ordnance Survey National Grid co-ordinates and orthometric heights using RTK Differential GPS. The earthworks comprise: fragmentary remains of medieval and post-medieval cultivation ridges in extremely low relief; a short stretch of medieval headland in a reasonable state of preservation; and a post-medieval cart-track. The report provides an illustrative and descriptive account of the earthworks, using a combination of computer-generated graphics and conventional survey drawings (hachure plan), supported by digital photography. It also provides an account of the historical characteristics of the earthworks, placing them into historic context. |
