Popis: | The buoyancy-induced channel backflow phenomenon in mixed convection flow has been studied in a vertical channel heated by a centrally-positioned heating rod and connected at the top of its length to a large plenum containing cool water. The bottom two thirds of the channel length is heated, while the top one third is an unheated section. Channel backflow represents a situation where, under specific heat flux and flow rate conditions, cool water from the upper plenum flows down and penetrates the channel. A semi-empirical model has been developed to provide insight into the backflow phenomenon. The unknown constants in this model have been established using experimental water data taken over a wide range of heat flux and flow rate combinations for three different channel diameters. The resulting correlations are for the onset of backflow and the backflow stream penetration depth. |
