Popis: The dependence of the total acoustic power radiated by a turbojet engine on one dimensionless parameter was put forward by Mawardi and Dyer. This relationship is reviewed in the light of further data, and also the dependence of acoustic power on a number of other parameters, dimensionless and otherwise, is presented. The special limitations of dimensional analysis in this problem are discussed. The results of some comparative measurements using carefully controlled operating conditions varying over a small range are presented, and the precautions necessary to obtain meaningful measurements of engine parameters are discussed. Reasons are given for doubting the agreement of acoustic measurements made at maximum engine conditions and those below this point. The turbojet engine is a complex noise source, and while the jet is the most powerful component, others are not negligible; compressor noise, combustor noise, and noise arising from vibration are discussed.
