Night Shift Work and Sleep Wake Cycle in Nurses: an Integrative Review

Popis: The night work can lead to exhaustion and fatigue, often by the lack of sleep, identified on some studies as a negative factor to health. This article has as purpose to identify the characteristics of the nurse’s sleep-wake cycle that works on night shift. 11 articles were selected as results, 54% of the studies were published in the years of 2012 and 2013, which allowed to observe the characteristics of the night worker in the course of 24 hours. Two axes were elaborated: night worker and the sleep and night worker and the wake. Hence it is possible to conclude that hospital institutions need to adopt preventive measures regarding the workers’ physical and mental health from the night shift.
