Popis: Marine geological investigations at Institute of Geological Sciences of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine were begun in 1962. Over the past 55 years, marine geology was become as a new scientific direction in theAcademyofSciencesofUkraineand then was transformed into an independent branch of fundamental research. Its development in Ukraine is associated with the names of well-known scientists: – E. F. Shnukov, O.Yu. Mitropolsky, V.Ya. Didkovsky, A.E. Babynets, B.F. Zernetsky, V.I. Melnyk. The main directions of scientific work during the last 20 years are comprehensive geological, sedimentological, lithological, geoecological, biostratigraphical, paleontological and paleofacial studies in the World oceans, in particular on the shelf and the continental slope of the Black and Azov seas, within the marine reserve areas of the shelf, in the zone of the "land - water area" interaction, as well as research of the Antarctic seas.Among the most important achievements of this direction of the Institute of Geological Sciences of NAS of Ukraine are the implementation of many international and national scientific programs and projects of fundamental research, including the EU framework program, the implementation of the State Program of Ukraine Studies in Antarctica, the creation of databases of marine geological data and the Atlas of sediments in various parts of the oceans. Today, the Department of Modern Marine sedimentogenesis of the Institute of Geological Sciences of NAS of Ukraine is one of a few scientific subdivisions of Ukrainian science, which has been studying sedimentation processes in seas and oceans for the last decades.
