Popis: This study examined the nutritional care provided by home health nurses using patient satisfaction as an outcome measure of quality of care. Instrumentation for the study included a self-reported patient satisfaction survey and a medical record audit. The mean age of the sample (n=153) was 74.5. The mean number of diagnoses was 2.77, and the mean number of prescribed dietary modifications was 1.65. Forty one percent of the sample were on a low sodium diet, and 21% on a low cholesterol diet. The mean number of dietary counseling sessions provided by the nurse for each patient was 6.49. Analysis of the survey results (n=76) indicated that patients were the least satisfied with the continuity of nutritional care provided between the physician and the nurse. Multiple regression analyses indicated that technical competence and interpersonal skills of the nurse was predictive of satisfaction with nutritional care. Dietary adherence related beliefs adapted from the Health Belief Model (self-efficacy, knowledge, and perceived benefits) was also predictive of overall satisfaction with nutritional care. The study results indicated that opportunities for RD's currently exist in home health care agencies. Dietitians are the key linkage in promoting quality nutritional care in home health.
