Popis: This chapter surveys the place of knowledge in China during the immediate pre-modern period. It examines the relationship between scholars and the state, with a particular attention to the Song dynasty and the views developed during that period about the cultural and political roles of scholars and scholarship. It discusses how knowledge of such things as the movements of heavenly bodies, or of the state of the weather, were understood to have consequences for the workings of the state. It surveys efforts by state bureaucracy to control the generation and the circulation of knowledge as part of the business of government.
