The Centre of Archaeology at Staffordshire University was commissioned in September 2014 by The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust to undertake an archaeological evaluation at the site of Nash's House/New Place, Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire (centred on NGR SP 2010 2547). The archaeological work was undertaken in order to assess the foundations of buildings belonging to Nash's house and the property next door prior to re-development of the area. The work was also undertaken to assess the survival of archaeological deposits, remains, features and structures and increase our understanding of the historic development of Nash's House/New Place to help inform proposed future archaeological works and site development. Five test pits were excavated, one geological test pit was observed and three geological bore holes were monitored. During the course of the fieldwork the foundations were successfully exposed and the presence, preservation and type of the buried remains in these small areas were identified. This information can help formulate a mitigation strategy during ground works associated with the re-development of the site. The test pits revealed the presence of a stoney levelling layer across the area, potentially medieval in date. The bore holes revealed the potential for deeper surviving archaeological features. |
