1. 1. The mode of action of the crustacean hyperglycemie hormone (CHH) of Chasmagnathus granulata, a meso-supralittoral crab from southern Brazil, was investigated. 2. 2. Injected glucose disappears faster (P < 0.05) from the blood of eyestalkless animals than of controls. 3. 3. The incubation of gill filaments, muscle and hepatopancreas in the presence and absence of glucose and eyestalk extract demonstrated that the glucose uptake by isolated muscle is reduced in the presence of the extract, this being the only affected tissue. 4. 4. Such results suggest that the CHH might cause hyperglycemia by decreasing glucose utilization and/or entrance into the tissues. This is in accordance with the general biochemical and physiological strategies that seem to occur in animals frequently exposed to hypoxic conditions, as in the case of several intertidal animals including C. granulata. |
