The colour effects, which occur in the liquid phase in mixtures of quinones or nitro compounds on the one hand and unsaturated or aromatic compounds on the other, are attributed to complexresonance. By this is understood a covalent binding between two molecules, the character of which lies in between that of a single bond and no bond at all. A summary is given of the two types of substances which can exhibit complexresonance with each other and of the phenomena which are associated with complexresonance. Complexresonance is considered as the cause of a number of cases of quenching of fluorescence. In addition it is considered of importance for the formation of the activated complex of certain reactions and for the explanation of some types of enzymatic reactions. |
