Popis: The hyperfine structure of the ground state of N/sup 14/ and N/sup 15/ was determined by optical pumping with spin exchange. A circulation system, which forced the nitrogen through an electrodeless rf discharge lnto the resonance bulb, provided a continuous source of atomic nitrogen. Opticallypumped cesium was used to polarize and analyze the nitrogen. The zero-field intervals extrapolated to zero pressure are N/sup 14/, nu (5/2-3/2) = 26,127,288 plus or minus 40 cps; N/sup 14/, nu (3/2-1/2 = 15,676,390 plus or minus 40 cps; and N/ sup 15/, nu (2--1) = A/sup 14/= (+) 10,450,925 plus or minus 20 cps, B/sup 14/ = (-) 7 plus or minus 20 cps, and A/sup 15/ (-)14,645,441 plus or minus 20 cps. These results include small corrections for second-order hyperfine interactions. A pressure shift of +1.9 plus or minus 0.4 cps/mm Hg of N/sub 2/ was established for the N/sup 14/ magnetic dipole interaction constant (A/sup 14/ ). The hyperfine structure anomaly is DELTA = (A/sup 14/g/sub I//sup 15 /A/sup 15/g/sub 1/sup 14)spin-spin mixing of the /sup 4/S, /sup 2/D, and /sup 2/P states is discussed. (auth)
