The aim of the present investigation was to decide whether or not conditions leading to lightning during thunderstorms also exist in dust clouds encountered in industry, for example, in big containers. Experiments with dust clouds were performed inside a 60 m 3 concrete bunker. Clouds were charged using two separate powder-injection systems. The electric field strengths of the charges generated were measured with four field-mills. In addition, arrangements were made for the detection of high-frequency signals. The results show that the conditions currently thought responsible for the initiation of lightning-like discharges in dust—air mixtures did indeed exist for periods of 15–20 s in each of nearly 30 experiments, yet not a single discharge took place. The implications of the results are discussed in relation to industrial installations. |
